Insulation removal in Santa Cruz CA - a clean attic ready for new insulation
Old insulation soaked, matted or full of droppings? We take out what has to go so the new layer can do its job.

Does my old attic insulation need to come out?
Insulation removal in Santa Cruz is the job of pulling old insulation out of your attic or crawl space so new insulation goes onto clean, dry framing, and it lets us see the problems that were hiding underneath.
Most calls start with something you noticed. The attic smells musty, the insulation looks flat and stained, there are droppings by the hatch, or a remodel is coming and you want to know what's up there first. The price mostly comes down to how big the attic is, how much old material has to come out, how tight the space is to work in and what's mixed into it. The schedule mostly turns on what has to happen first, like getting rodents trapped out or having odd-looking material tested. When I come out for the estimate, I'll go up, show you what I find and give you a number for your house.
How our insulation removal works, start to finish
The first thing I decide is whether anything needs to come out at all, because old insulation only has to go when it's wet, damaged or full of pests, and otherwise we can often add on top and save you the cost. If I spot something that might be vermiculite, we stop right there and point you to an asbestos specialist, since that's not something anyone should stir up. When removal is the right call, our installers vacuum the old material out through a hose into bags outside, so the mess leaves your house instead of drifting through it. With the attic bare, we clean up what's left and do the air sealing, closing the small gaps around can lights, pipes and the hatch, because new insulation can't do much while a draft is pushing through it. Then we make sure the eave vents are clear so the attic keeps breathing, and the new layer goes in even all the way to the edges, where it's usually thinnest. I check in while the crew works, so you have one person to ask if anything turns up.
Removal is often one piece of a bigger fix. If the trouble started under the floor, the same visit can cover crawl space insulation, and when a remodel has the walls open, that's the easiest time to add wall insulation while everything's exposed.
Why Santa Cruz homeowners call Premier Santa Cruz Insulation Services for insulation removal
I come to every estimate
I come out for every estimate myself, and our installers do the removal with me checking in on the job. That way the person who climbed into your attic and explained it to you is the same one keeping an eye on how it's done.
Licensed and fully insured here
We're licensed and fully insured, so a crew working above your ceiling is covered while they're up there. Ask me about it when I'm out for the estimate and I'll walk you through it.
Painter first, insulation since 2023
I painted houses for years and kept finding cold, drafty rooms no coat of paint could fix, so I learned insulation on other crews and started this business in Santa Cruz in 2023. That's why I care so much about order, because new insulation laid over an old problem just hides it.
We know the asbestos steps here
If testing finds asbestos, the Monterey Bay Air Resources District requires a certified asbestos consultant to inspect before a regulated renovation starts, and work disturbing 160 square feet or more of it needs notice to the district, so that inspection sets the timeline. We hand that part to a specialist, and since we're based in Santa Cruz and work across the county and over the hill in the South Bay, we can plan the new insulation around their dates.
Getting the order right matters most on a removal, so the problem comes out before anything new goes in. Your satisfaction, guaranteed. Tell us about your attic or call (831) 201-6061, and I'll come take a look.
Get a free on-site look at your old insulation
Send the form or call (831) 201-6061 with your attic's rough size, what the insulation looks like and any signs of rodents or water, and we'll reply within one business day. I'll come out myself for a free on-site estimate, and there's no pressure and no obligation to book.

Questions before you book insulation removal
How much does attic insulation removal cost in Santa Cruz?
Removing old attic insulation usually costs about $1,600 to $3,600 per attic across the US, so treat that as a ballpark and not a Santa Cruz quote. Attic size, how much material is up there, how hard it is to reach and whether it's contaminated all move it, and asbestos insulation costs far more per square foot to remove. I'll give you a number for your own attic when I come out.
Can I put new insulation over old insulation?
Usually yes, as long as the old layer is clean and dry. Insulation that's been wet, moldy, burned or lived in by pests should come out first, because new material on top just covers the problem and keeps the smell. A lot of attics only need sealing and a top-up.
What should I do if my attic has vermiculite insulation?
Leave it alone, which is what the EPA recommends, because disturbing vermiculite can release asbestos fibers that are harmful to breathe. It's a pebbly, pour-in fill that's usually gray-brown or silver-gold, so describe it or send a photo when you call. If you decide to have it removed, the EPA says to hire a trained, accredited asbestos abatement contractor that's separate from whoever assessed it, and not to try it yourself.
Who can remove asbestos insulation in Santa Cruz?
A contractor working on 100 square feet or more of asbestos material needs the state licensing board's asbestos abatement classification, known as C-22, or a license qualifier who passed the state's asbestos certification exam, and has to be registered with Cal/OSHA. Ask any crew you're considering about both. If I find signs of asbestos, I'll stop and point you to that kind of specialist.
How long does insulation removal take?
Most removals take anywhere from about 4 hours to 2 days or more, depending on the attic's size and how complicated the job is, going by a national cost guide. The bigger wait is often before the job starts, if rodents need trapping or something needs testing first.
How do I clean up an attic with rodent droppings before new insulation?
Get the rodents trapped out completely first, then wait about 5 days after the last signs of them before anyone cleans, which is what health guidance on rodent cleanup advises. So if you've got mice or rats up there, build that trapping and waiting time into your plans before we set a removal date. Once it's clear, our crew pulls out the soiled insulation and cleans up before anything new goes in.
Work that often goes with removal
- Crawl space insulation
Cold floors or droppings under the house usually mean the crawl space needs the same clean-out and a fresh layer.
- Wall insulation
Open walls during a remodel are the cheapest chance you'll get to fill them before the drywall goes back up.
