Spray foam insulation in Santa Cruz CA - the right foam in the right spots

Hot room over the garage or a damp, cold crawl space? We seal and insulate the spots where foam earns its cost.

Spray foam insulation fills sections between exposed attic roof trusses, with a worker and metal ductwork nearby.

Is spray foam worth it for my Santa Cruz house?

Spray foam insulation in Santa Cruz is foam our installers spray onto walls, roof decks and crawl space framing, where it swells into every crack, so one pass both insulates and air-seals, closing the gaps that let drafts and hot air through. It's worth the cost in some spots of your house and not in others, and sorting out which is most of my job.

Most calls I get start with a drafty older house, a remodel with the walls open, or a room over the garage that's hot all summer, and the first question is whether foam is worth it. The price moves with how many spots need foam, how big they are, which foam type each one gets and whether old insulation has to come out first, and the schedule mostly turns on the weather inside your house, because foam needs the right air and surface temperature and humidity to go on well, plus finding a stretch when your family can be out of the house. I look at all of that on site, and the estimate gives you your own number. We're based in Santa Cruz and work across the county and the cities around it, including over the hill in the South Bay.

How we handle spray foam insulation, spot by spot

It starts with me in your attic, crawl space or open walls, checking how many inches of insulation are already up there, how old the house is and whether anything is soaked or full of droppings, because foam sprayed over an old problem just hides it. Then I walk you through which spots suit foam and which type each one gets. That's closed-cell, the dense kind that blocks moisture, for tight or damp places, open-cell where it fits better, and something simpler wherever it would do the job for less. Before we set a date, we talk through re-entry time, the point when it's safe to come back inside, along with any health concerns in your household, so nobody's caught off guard. On install day our installers cover what needs protecting, pull out anything that has to go, foam around the can lights, pipes and attic hatch, and keep the eave vents clear so the attic can still breathe, with me checking in on the job. We clean up when the work's done, and I show you what went where.

Foam is usually one piece of a bigger job, and it isn't always the best value. Where an attic just needs more coverage, we'd often rather seal the gaps and top it up with blown-in insulation, loose fill blown in through a hose, and when the whole attic needs sorting out, from cleanup to sealing to new coverage, that's our attic insulation work.

Why Santa Cruz homeowners call Premier Santa Cruz Insulation Services for spray foam

  • I come out for every estimate

I do every estimate myself, and our installers do the work with me checking in on the job. That way the person who looked at your crawl space is the same one making sure it's done the way we talked about.

  • Licensed and fully insured crew

We're licensed and fully insured. The state licensing board counts anyone installing insulation for heat or sound control as an insulation contractor, so ask any foam installer, us included, whether they hold that license.

  • Old problems fixed before foam

Most of our calls come from owners of older homes, where leaks, damp spots and tired insulation are common, and we deal with those first. New insulation over a leak doesn't fix it, it just hides it until the framing shows the damage.

  • In business since 2023

I painted houses for years and kept finding cold, drafty rooms no coat of paint could fix, so I learned insulation on other crews and started this business in 2023. That's why I'd rather explain what's going on in your attic than leave you guessing.

With foam, what matters most is getting the right type into the right spot after the old problems are dealt with, and that starts with a look at your house. Call (831) 201-6061 or send us a message with the area you want insulated, its rough size and any health concerns in your household.

Get a spray foam estimate for your house

Questions before you book spray foam insulation

How much does spray foam insulation cost in Santa Cruz?

Insulation in Santa Cruz usually costs about $1 to $5 per square foot, and that range covers insulation work in general, not spray foam alone. Foam costs more than loose fill because it seals air while it insulates, so where your job lands depends on the spots and the foam type. I'll give you your own figure once I've seen the house.

Do I need open-cell or closed-cell spray foam?

Closed-cell is the pick for thin spaces and damp spots, because it packs the most insulating value per inch of any common insulation, slows moisture and stiffens the framing it's sprayed on. One insulation guide says to always use closed-cell below ground level, since moisture from soil and concrete passes through open-cell foam and can cause trouble in the wall. On a lot of houses we end up using each type where it fits.

What is the best way to insulate an attic, spray foam or blown-in?

For an open attic with a flat floor you can reach and plenty of headroom, blown-in usually wins, and one insulation guide calls that kind of attic the place spray foam wastes the most money, since blown-in cellulose gets there for a fraction of the cost. The exception is when your heating and cooling equipment sits up there and you want the attic inside the insulated part of the house, where the same guide calls open-cell foam under the roof deck the standard approach. I'll tell you which side of that line your attic is on.

How long does it take before we can go back in the house after spray foam?

Plan on everyone being out during the install and for at least 24 hours after, which is what federal safety guidance advises. That's a minimum, so line up a place for the family and pets to stay, and ask your installer how they handle safety on your job before anything is scheduled.

Is spray foam safe if someone in my house has asthma or allergies?

It can be a concern, so bring it up in the first conversation. The same federal guidance says people with asthma, respiratory allergies, skin conditions or an earlier reaction to isocyanates, chemicals in the foam, should read the product information carefully and can consider other insulation if needed. If that's your household, we'll go over the product details together and look at other options.

Can someone without a license do a small spray foam job in California?

Only a very small one, because California lets unlicensed work go up to $1,000, raised from $500. That exemption holds only when the work needs no permit and the person doing it employs no one on the project, so anyone quoting more than that, or showing up with a crew, needs a license.

  • Attic insulation

If upstairs bakes all summer and the attic is the reason, a full attic job covers cleanup, sealing and new coverage in one plan.

  • Blown-in insulation

When your attic floor is open and easy to reach, loose fill is often the cheaper way to get it properly covered.
